THE amount of debt owed by people struggling to keep up with repayments has reached a new high, a debt charity said.
The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) said the average person going to it for help with debt during the three months to the end of September owed £29,000.
The figure is 2.5 per cent higher than the £28,300 people owed during the previous quarter.
But it said that while the level of borrowing was accelerating, the ability to repay creditors also improved during the three months.
The CCCS sets up repayment plans, under which interest on the debt is frozen, in exchange for repaying a set amount each month.
During the third quarter of the year, the amount people who had agreed repayment plans paid rose by an average of £25, the equivalent of an extra £300 a year, to £235 a month.
