A man is critically ill in intensive care after collapsing from a serious head injury he got in a fight the night before.
The unnamed 33-year-old single man, from Brandon, County Durham, was found lying in Front Street, Meadowfield, on Saturday evening, was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham and then transferred to Newcastle General Hospital.
On Friday night he was involved in a fight in the car park of the Burnside Club, between Bournmoor and Fence Houses, near Chester-le-Street.
He was left semi-conscious and was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham where doctors wanted to keep him in for 24 hours for checks but he discharged himself the following morning.
Police are questioning a 20-year-old man from Fence Houses they later arrested on suspicion of assault and are urging any witnesses to the fight, or the argument in the club's bar that preceded it, to call Chester-le-Street CID.
