CHRISTMAS spirit came early to pupils at a village school, as they helped to make the festive season happier for underprivileged children.
Students from Hurworth School Maths and Computing College have spent several weeks filling shoe boxes with presents for youngsters in foreign countries, who may not otherwise receive Christmas gifts.
The boxes, packed with toys and dolls, were collected as part of the national Operation Christmas Child, which aims to make Christmas a happy time for poorer children around the world.
Yesterday, Hurworth pupils packaged the boxes to be sent to impoverished towns in Eastern Europe.
Teacher Rita Rees praised the children's efforts in donating the presents.
"There was a really good response to the appeal and hopefully we can give some children a nice Christmas," she said.
