FLOWER expert Anthony Coatsworth insisted before a garden show on Saturday that he had no chance of winning major prizes - but walked away with six trophies.
He was awarded five silver cups for his chrysanthemums, including one for the best vase of them in the annual event at Middleton in Teesdale near Barnard Castle.
His other trophy was for the best beetroot in the show, of which he is secretary.
Judges said the standard of entries, which came from all over Teesdale, was exceptionally high.
Mr Coatsworth said: "I really thought I hadn't much chance as there were so many fine entries, so it was a surprise to be given such a large array of silverware.
Show treasurer Pam Phillips received a shield for the best collection of vegetables and a cup for most points in the vegetable classes.
Grandmother Betty Tompkins was a popular winner, with three trophies for most handicrafts points, most produce points and the best house plant, a begonia.
Farmer's son John Raine, 14, who spends much of his spare time tending sheep, took first prize for a decorated cake with a creation shaped like a ladybird. The Teesdale School pupil said: "I enjoy working in the kitchen on things like this, so I may become a chef."
Other trophy winners were: Best vegetables (onions), Tony Wade; floral artistry, Tracy Collinson; fruit cake, June Kneller; photographs, Carol Grey;handwriting, Taryn Walker; junior handicrafts, Rebecca Collnson; painting, Chloe Atkinson; artwork, Rebecca Pinkney; best large garden and best overall, Joan Drewe; medium garden, Margaret Thompson; small garden, Rosemary Thompson; commercial premises, Sue's Cafe.
As Maurice Scott auctioned the produce, show chairman Elizabeth Beadle said: "The show has been one of our best in recent times as the standard was so high."
