WORK is finally under way to create a "history garden" in Hartlepool's Headland.
The project, which will take eight months to complete, includes the creation of an imposing formal square in front of the Borough Hall.
The garden will feature a history trail, using a variety of materials and artwork, to reflect the Headland's history.
The project met opposition from bus operator Stagecoach Hartlepool, but it has since withdrawn its objection to the removal of the bus stop at the bottom of Middlegate.
Hartlepool Borough Council has agreed to give the project extra support by meeting a £105,000 funding shortfall.
The initial work, over the next few weeks, will include removing some walling and demolishing the existing toilet block.
The Middlegate bus stop will be dismantled and a temporary bus stop will be in operation.
Archaeologists, who visited the site earlier this year, will use the opportunity to carry out some further studies and excavations over the next couple of months while the work is under way.
