AN extra £1.5m is to be invested in improving services and the environment in east Durham.
Easington District Council yesterday voted to release the money from its general fund reserves to help finance dozens of local initiatives.
Earmarked for the new investment are schemes to revitalise communities and make them safer and cleaner.
Over the next three years, money will be spent on road-sweeping machines, graffiti-removing equipment, litter cleaners, bins for litter and dog waste and new radios for street wardens.
More than £350,000 will also be spent on reclaiming brownfield sites, to bring land into better use, and the removal of environmental eyesores such as derelict buildings.
