A COUPLE wanting to live in the countryside to provide round-the-clock protection for their four Arab horses have had their idea rejected by planners.
James and Gillian Atkin wanted to put a static caravan next to their stables, in a Special Landscape Area, because they fear for their safety.
In a letter to Harrogate Borough Council, North Yorkshire, they said horse theft was not uncommon and cases of mutilation were increasing.
They said: "We feel that these are genuine concerns for all horse owners. We would also like to bring to your attention the many cases of vandalism to property in this area."
Planning officials said the structure would be a substantial chalet-type building with two double bedrooms and with the appearance of a bungalow.
Officials said using the greenfield site for the property at Bilton Lane, north of Harrogate, would conflict with council policy.
Councillors unanimously rejected the scheme.
