A NEW club will be established on Teesside for BMX enthusiasts.
Dozens of BMX riders in Hartlepool use the course at Summerhill Country Park, off Catcote Road, and have decided to set up a club with help from Hartlepool Borough Council.
The first meeting of the club will take place at 12.30pm tomorrow, which coincides with the 11th anniversary of the National Lottery.
Summerhill has been a major benefactor of the Lottery, having received more than £1m. The Summerhill BMX course is undergoing a facelift to improve it, again thanks to support from the National Lottery.
Summerhill manager Tony Davison said: "We are delighted that the BMX riders who use our course are creating a club, and this should encourage even more people to participate in the sport."
The improvements to the course are being made with help from local riders who use the course, including British cycling coach Steve Noble, and riders Robbie Brown and Alex Smiles. Input has also come from Jeremy Hayes, British cycling's Olympic coach, and Peter Root, British cycling's regional development officer, who visited the course.
Mr Hayes said he would be interested in using Summerhill for Olympic squad training. Summerhill is also intending to stage competitions in the future.
