YOUNGSTERS were given a chance to carve out a name for themselves at an art contest with a difference.
The competition was organised by the University of Sunderland to coincide with Halloween and gave school pupils the opportunity to create a piece of artwork from a pumpkin.
More than 100 pumpkins were delivered to Valley Road Community Primary School, in Hendon, for children to carve out a piece of art.
A further 40 were delivered to the University of Sunderland, to give staff and students a chance to sculpt their own pumpkin art.
The contest is part of the university's aim, through its Vardy Gallery, where the entries are being displayed, to encourage youngsters to take part in artistic projects while also serving as an introduction for them to contemporary art.
The thousands of seeds from inside the pumpkins have been donated to Bishopwearmouth Horticultural Nurseries to produce fruit for next year's event.
