A VET is urging people to consider their pets over the bonfire period.

Wilson Veterinary Group in Bishop Auckland has issued advice to owners and is offering programmes for pets.

Donna Smith, from the group, said that November was a time for increased vigilance and awareness of the dangers pets face outside the home.

She added that getting pets accustomed to loud noises is a good idea, and CD recordings of firework sounds can help them cope. She also recommended desensitisation and natural pheromone devices.

She said: "Dog Appeasing Pheromone is a plug-in device similar to an air freshener which releases calming pheromones into the air. We humans cannot detect the smell but your pet will."

Owners are also advised to find out when big displays in the area take place - for example, Bishop Auckland on November 3 and Spennymoor and Darlington on November 5 - and make sure the pets are in a room where they feel secure.

Ms Smith said: "If you are having your own bonfire night celebrations, you should always check beneath the bonfire before you light it to make sure there are no cats or hedgehogs hiding underneath."

Anyone concerned about the effect the bonfire period could have on their pets should contact their veterinary practice. Wilson Veterinary Group is one of many that will discuss a programme for pets.

Ms Smith said: "The problem may get worse over time if left without assistance.

"Plan ahead, keep pets safe and indoors wherever possible."
