FAMILIES looking forward to a happy Christmas are being asked to fill shoe boxes with small gifts for less fortunate children.
Schools and churches are also being asked to take part in the scheme, which aims to collect hundreds of boxes in the Barnard Castle area of County Durham.
Eunice Tate, of Startforth, who is helping to organise the effort, said yesterday: "It can make all the difference for children who won't otherwise get much on Christmas Day."
It is being run in conjunction with the Samaritans. Explanatory leaflets are available from the Newcastle Building Society in Galgate, Barnard Castle, and filled boxes can be taken there.
The society also has stickers showing whether boxes are suitable for a girl or boy, and for what age group.
