A CENTRE aimed at producing the next generation of musicians and performers in the region opened yesterday.
The £4.5m centre for music excellence is based at The Sage Gateshead music centre.
Up-and-coming Newcastle band Red Letter Suits performed at a concert at the venue last night to launch the centre.
The Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning for Inclusivity in Contemporary Musical Culture (CETL), will be used by students from Durham, Newcastle, North-umbria, Teesside, Sunderland and the Open universities.
They joined The Sage to beat off national competition to secure £4.5m of Government funding.
The centre will work with students in several genres, including folk and rock, to prepare students for working as self-employed musicians.
Centre director Professor David Clarke said: "CETL provides an unparalleled opportunity for the six universities for the North-East and The Sage to work together to enrich students' experience of music in higher education."
