FINAL preparations are in hand for one of the region's biggest bonfire events.
The 30th annual bonfire and fireworks display at Aykley Heads, Durham City, is expected to attract several thousand spectators.
The event, jointly organised by Durham Police and the local fire brigade, takes place near police headquarters on Friday.
Chief Constable Paul Garvin and Susan Johnson, chief executive of County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue, will light the bonfire at 7pm, followed 15 minutes later by the first of more than £5,000 worth of rockets and bangers in a spectacular 40-minute show.
For the first time, a fair has been added to the show along with the usual refreshments and a Durham FM roadshow.
Admission, from 5pm, costs £2 for adults, £1 for children and under fives get in free. Profits will go to local charities.
Tickets can be bought on the night or in advance from all main police stations in County Durham and Darlington.
Parking on the night is at County Hall or the Durham Light Infantry Museum. Soft drinks and food will be sale.
Ms Johnson said: "The bonfire will be more spectacular than ever. It promises to be, as always, a fun, safe and highly enjoyable evening for all."
