THE memory of a brave grandmother who lost her battle with cancer earlier this year is now helping other people face terminal illness.

Hartlepool woman Sandy Richardson, 53, died in June after a four-year struggle with cancer.

Her husband, Colin, 57, donated £1,000 to Hartlepool and District Hospice in memory of his wife.

Mr Richardson, of Drakes Park, Seaton Carew, said: "While Sandra was alive, so many people found strength and inspiration from her courageous fight for life.

"She was known for her bravery, positive attitude and determination to help others in a similar situation to herself.

"This donation to Hartlepool and District Hospice is one way of honouring this memory in a meaningful and lasting way."

Mother-of-three Sandy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001 and, two years later, doctors delivered the devastating news that the disease had spread to her liver, fourth rib and pelvis.

Despite this blow, Sandy refused to give up hope and remained determined to face her illness head-on.

She continued to work as a women's enterprise officer for Business Link, Tees Valley, and last year she was honoured with an award for best supporter of women's business at the North-East Entrepreneur Awards for her role looking after women's issues within ethnic minorities.

She found a course of therapy in the US that had very positive results, but in May this year, doctors prepared her family for the worst.

A month later, she died, leaving three daughters, Lauren, 26, Hayley, 24, and Jonelle, 21, and granddaughter Claudia, four.

Chief executive of Hartlepool and District Hospice Tony Collins said: "We are deeply touched and moved by the family's generosity.

"A donation to help others in a similar situation to Sandy is a wonderful way to continue the legacy of a woman who continues to inspire so many."
