A MAN who stopped to help a fellow motorist who had apparently broken down was attacked and robbed.
The man was driving on an isolated road from Gate Helmsley towards Claxton, near York, when he saw the car and offered to help the man standing with it, at 7.30am yesterday.
He was then attacked by two men wearing balaclavas, who smashed the driver's window and assaulted him, leaving him with a facial wound that required hospital treatment.
They then broke into the boot and stole a quantity of jewellery.
A short time later, a white Nissan Primera and a green Ford Fiesta were found abandoned and on fire at Kissthorn Farm, at nearby Bossall.
Police believe this is linked to the first incident and are appealing to people living in Upper Helmsley, Sand Hutton, Claxton and Bossall for information.
Officers are interested in any sightings of the vehicles yesterday morning or in recent weeks.
Anyone with information is asked to call Malton CID on 0845 60 60 247.
