A FIREFIGHTER visited a Newton Aycliffe school to encourage pupils to stay safe around Bonfire Night.
Dave White, community fire safety officer for the Sedgefield area, spoke to youngsters at Sugar Hill Primary School.
He told pupils about the dangers of playing with fireworks and that they should try to attend an organised event rather than an unauthorised bonfire and display.
Mr White also reminded them it was an offence for children to buy or carry fireworks or for anyone to use them in a public place.
David Bassell, of The Co-op Funeral Services, also joined the presentation to launch an art competition for children who have been asked to paint a fire safety poster during the half-term holiday.
Prizes will be presented to three winners, who will also get a ride in a limousine, next month.
Teacher Chris Ridley said: "Hopefully this will encourage them to avoid fireworks themselves and share these safety messages with their families so they all enjoy fireworks night safely."
