WORRIES over rising personal debt levels resurfaced yesterday after it emerged the number of mortgage possession orders in England and Wales jumped by 66 per cent.
The Department for Constitutional Affairs (DCA) said 19,687 orders were made in the three months to the end of September 30, compared with 11,862 a year ago.
The figure, based on 29,991 actions entered in county courts in England and Wales, does not not reflect the number of properties taken into possession as the parties involved can still negotiate a compromise.
However, the Council of Mortgage Lenders said in July that the number of homes repossessed rose for first time in seven years to 4,640 in the first half of the year, as higher interest rates and debt levels took their toll.
Yesterday's figure for possession orders compares with a rise of 61 per cent for the three months to June.
