CRIMEFIGHTERS are urging householders to be vigilant as winter draws near and the nights start to draw in.
Hambleton is regarded as one of the safest districts in the country to live in, with only 198 domestic burglaries recorded over the past year.
But the local community safety partnership is urging people to help them reduce the offences still further.
About a third of burglaries are sneak-ins - when offenders walk through an unlocked door, or climb through an open window.
"With a little thought, we can prevent a large number of these incidents and the distress that it causes to the victims," said partnership officer PC Izzy Wilkinson.
"We live in one of the safest districts - but we want to go one step further and make it the safest."
She added: "By thinking about securing our homes, we can prevent future burglaries.
"It really takes only a little thought, a few seconds of action and maybe a small amount of expense to thwart these criminals."
