IN 1925, a handful of mothers became the founder members of Easington Village's Mothers' Union.
And yesterday, the organisation, which is attached to the community's St Mary's Church, was still going strong, as it celebrated its 80th birth- day.
The milestone was marked with a special service in St Mary's, which was followed by a buffet tea.
A special exhibition of memorabilia charting the Mothers' Union's long history was also a highlight of the day.
An exhibition recalled how the organisation had been in its heyday in the 1930s and 1940s, undertaking many fund-raising events and taking part in numerous outings.
Nowadays, members still meet once a month and outings are organised.
Over recent years, mothers in the group have continued fundraising and frequently provide aid for the homeless community.
The Mothers' Union also organises a service taking toiletries to people in hos- pital.
