A DOG walker who helped save the life of a stabbing victim was one of several people to be awarded a police commendation yesterday.
Chief Superintendent Bernie Mitchell presented awards to police officers and civilians from the North Yorkshire Police western area at a ceremony at Swinton Park Hotel, near Masham.
Among the recipients was 40-year-old Simon Shaw, from Ripon.
Mr Shaw was walking his dog one evening in July last year when he came across a 21-year-old man who had been stabbed in the chest.
Police say Mr Shaw's actions may have saved the young soldier's life.
Mr Shaw, a deputy hornblower in the town, said: "It was lovely to get recognition.
"I would do it again anytime - there's no question about it."
Speaking about the ceremony, a police spokesman said: "The police officers, support staff and members of the public who received awards have demonstrated their courage, ingenuity, sensitivity and commitment for the benefit of the communities in North Yorkshire.
"Collectively, they have achieved an impressive reduction in crime and have been proactive in detecting crime."
Other recipients included Sergeant Christine Turner, who was recognised for her professionalism, dedication and tact during an inquiry into two rapes at Catterick Garrison.
The investigation resulted in a man being jailed for 14 years.
Detective Constable Paul Schofield, PC Amanda Hill and PC Sean Weldon also received awards.
The officers arrested a 14-year-old boy responsible for a large number of burglaries in the Knaresborough area during the summer last year.
The offender was sentenced to a two-year intensive supervision and surveillance order.
PC Sean Weldon received a commendation for his work with Harrogate Borough Council's fraud team.
Sergeant Gary Webb, PC Ben Diggins and PC Mick Place received commendations for their courage after a Boroughbridge woman armed herself with a knife when her house was being repossessed.
PC Helen Quaife and member of the public Richard Chamberlain were recognised for their bravery after a violent incident broke out and an officer was assaulted outside a Harrogate nightclub.
Other recipients included PC Ben Hallewell, PC Scott Nugent, PC Justin Booth and police control room operator Lynsey Swales.
