A PARTY to commemorate the people who fought on the Home Front during the Second World War was held in a North-East village over the weekend.
Broth and rice pudding were served up at Wood View Community Centre, in Langley Park, County Durham, on Saturday.
Members of a re-enactment society brought wartime vehicles, wore uniforms of the day and demonstrated how the equipment was used.
There was a magician and a storyteller for the children but it was the older people who enjoyed some of the old-fashioned sweets, such as black bullets, sherbet and liquorice.
Alison Spencely, community centre secretary, said: "Everyone loved it and the re-enactment people were impressed.
"Older people were reminiscing about when they used to buy the sweets we had and how much they cost and how many they got in a stocking for Christmas."
In the evening, there was a dance with swing tunes and beer on offer at 2p per pint because the coin looks like the old 1d piece.
The next 1940s music night at the centre is on November 12 and costs £2 for centre members and £4 for non-members. Fancy dress is optional and it starts at 8.15pm.
There is a Halloween party on Saturday and a fireworks party on November 4.
Both events start at 7.30pm and are free.
