A GROUP of young researchers are hoping their findings will help lead to a smoking ban in public places.
An all-female team from County Durham Youth Engagement Service's On Track Partnership Programme carried out a three-day survey for Local Democracy Week.
The results revealed that an overwhelming number of those questioned in Peterlee were in favour of a smoking ban in public places.
On Thursday, the members who carried out the survey presented their findings to county councillor Gordon Tennant.
Programme manager Jan Dixon said the project had been aimed not only at testing public opinion, but also at giving the team a chance to become involved in topical issues. She said: "I am delighted at the way the girls conducted the survey and delighted at the outcome.
"They showed real commitment and dedication and they are hopeful that their findings will have some impact."
The east Durham call for a smoking ban in public places has also been forwarded to Councillor Joan Freak, Easington District Council's cabinet member for social inclusion.
The research results were also handed to Redcar MP Vera Baird.
