PUPILS at a Darlington school are flying the flag for the environment thanks to a special award.
Abbey Infants School has been awarded the Green Flag for Eco Schools for the second time.
The flag is now flying at the school, following a presentation on Thursday by borough councillor Stephen Harker during a harvest assembly.
To be awarded the flag, the school had to show how it was encouraging pupils to think about the environment and taking real steps to be green.
Everyone at the school is encouraged to recycle, including collecting old ink cartridges and mobile phones, as well as turning off taps properly and switching off lights.
Pupils are taught to care for their local environment, and are encouraged to walk to school to reduce the number of cars travelling in the area.
Headteacher Elaine McCue said: "We are delighted that the work of pupils and staff has been recognised.
"It is important children learn from a young age about the difference they can make to their local environment.
"It was fitting that the flag was presented during our harvest festival which gave us all a chance to think about the world."
Councillor Harker said: "I am delighted to present this award to a school which is making every effort to be environmentally-friendly.
"Small changes can make a big difference and the work at Abbey Infants School proves this."
