ONE of the most spectacular events in the charity calendar will take place in Durham next week when volunteers test their nerves walking over burning coals.
The fourth annual fire walk to raise money for St Cuthbert's Hospice will be in the Market Place on Wednesday.
Volunteers are challenged to walk barefoot along a 20ft course of hot embers after a two-hour motivational talk to get them fired up for the challenge.
Dozens of people have signed up to test their faith in mind over matter, but there are still places available.
Everyone who takes part will receive a fundraising pack, a T-shirt and a certificate of achievement.
Registration will take place in the town hall from 6pm and spectators should arrive for 8pm, ahead of the walk at 8.30pm. To take part, call the hospice on 0191-386 1170.
This year, the hospice launched its Key Appeal, to celebrate its 18th anniversary by opening a ten-bed unit offering round-the-clock specialist care for terminally ill patients.
The hospice needs to raise £3.2m to build the extension.
It has brought in a remarkable £1.9m, but launched the appeal, backed by The Northern Echo, to raise the final £1.3m.
