SPORTS stars of the future are being helped on their way by their local authority.
Thirty-two talented young people have each received £150 towards training and travelling expenses from Hambleton District Council.
Each was also presented with a card giving them unlimited free access to the council's four leisure centres.
The youngsters compete in a variety of sports - including motorcycle trials, triathlon, cricket and gymnastics.
Each received a certificate recognising their sporting excellence at an evening hosted by Hambleton's cabinet member for health, Councillor Neville Huxtable and the chairman of Hambleton Sports Council, Mark Jarvis.
"Each has shown remarkably high levels of skill, dedication and commitment in their chosen sport. It would be of no surprise if we are cheering them on in the 2012 Olympics," said Coun Huxtable.
A service to sport award was made to Brian Taylor, of Thirsk, recognising 50 years of outstanding dedication to the promotion and provision of sport in the Thirsk area.
Awards were presented to Sophie Broadway, Emma Shillito, Allisia Kusz, Lindsey Johnston, Joseph Watson, Robert Ramsden, Douglas Roberts, Thomas Butler, Rebecca Rennison, Tom Rennison, Joseph Richards, Ross Breckon, Jessica Noone, Henry Blackett, Ryan McKendry, Liam McKendry, Ruth Hill and Ben Rowe.
