A WELCOME donation has ensured young patients are resting more comfortably after major surgery.
Beechwood and Easterside Social Club, in Middlesbrough, raised more than £5,000 for ward 22 at the town's James Cook University Hospital, giving staff the opportunity to buy two electric beds and a specialist chair for children.
The money came from two charity nights. Members Kevin Gibson and Harry Dunn visited the hospital to see their gift and met one of the patients benefiting from the bed, Kane Britton.
The nine-year-old is still recovering on the ward after being knocked off his bike at Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshsire, last month.
Sister Anna Harvey said: "It is amazing how much money the club has raised for us and we are extremely grateful. The beds are electric, so they go up and down, and are ideal for children who have had major surgery or been in road traffic accidents, like Kane.
"Also, we see a lot of children with plaster casts on, or who have special needs, so the chair is ideal for patients who can't always support themselves."
Mr Dunn said: "We would like to thank the rest of the committee, plus the members and visitors to the club, who support the charity shows.
"It is very much a joint effort and, without everyone's support, we wouldn't raise the money we do."
The club has another charity show, for members only, for ward 14, on Wednesday, December 7, from 7pm, in memory of former member Mick Marton.
