YOUNG people are being encouraged to continue their studies through music in an initiative that promotes learning through popular culture.
Darlington College of Technology is offering a one-year diploma in performing arts course, which is an introduction to the music industry, and also provides a route to the new Btec National Diploma in Music Technology.
For Jennifer Smith and Hannah Griffiths it has been the first step towards their dream of becoming singers.
"I am passionate about music," said Jennifer, 16. "The course is allowing me to develop my singing and write music as well.
"I have been singing for the past ten years in church, musicals and pantos. I also performed on stage during a visit to Africa, which was nerve-racking but great fun. Singing gives me more confidence."
Hannah, 16, of Darlington, gained her love of music from her father.
She said: "I would love to be a singer to show everyone what I can do."
