BUILDING work has started on a £4m centre for people with learning disabilities.
The residential centre, in Ashdale Road, Consett, will provide 24-hour care for 32 people to help them lead an independent life.
There will be four houses run by Accept Care to provide up to 50 jobs for nurses, carers and managers.
Accept Care chairman Cecil Graham said: "It is our policy to provide first-class terms and conditions of employment aimed at attracting and retaining good staff.
"A distinctive philosophy will operate, which recognises the potential of each client and encourages their active involvement in all aspects of the daily programme based on individual assessment and care plans.
"We believe in an active partnership working with all supporting agencies ranging from local government, health and training agencies to local schools, clergy, carers and residents."
The project was welcomed by Derwentside District Council leader, Councillor Alex Watson.
He said: "We are very excited about this project. There is a need for it in the area and this will provide tailored support for people's physical, social and emotional needs."
The centre is expected to be operational by next summer.
