There was fog on the Tyne today as the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh arrived in Newcastle for a day of official engagements which include opening one of the country's top music event venues.
The Royal Train pulled into Newcastle station at exactly 10am and the Queen, wearing a thick cream coat, descended on to the chill concourse to polite applause from well-wishers.
She was due to visit two schools and a lifeboat museum while the Duke was expected to see the work of a local wildlife trust during their day in Tyne & Wear.
The couple were then meeting up again for the main part of their day to officially open the £70 million Sage Gateshead music centre on the banks of the River Tyne.
The shiny glass building was designed by Lord Foster and offers top-class music facilities as well as stunning views of the Tyneside skyline.
