A COUNCIL is extending a programme that teaches children environmental citizenship through a series of free workshops.
The programme, run by Chester-le-Street District Council, aims to build on the success of a school recycling project last year involving about 3,000 pupils across the district.
It will mainly target year five pupils, with each day exploring issues such as how everyday activities can affect other people across the world.
The importance of nature conservation will be presented by environmental education specialist Paul Griffin, while issues surrounding environmental crime will be presented by the council's enforcement team and fire service.
A waste in arts session will be provided by a professional artist from Melting Pot Arts - involving a puppet show by Emma Boor.
Red Rose Primary School this week hosted a performance by the Konflux Theatre in Education Group.
The production, What on Earth, is an interactive play that covers sustainable living and good environmental citizenship.
The council sponsored the one-off production to showcase the innovative approach taken by Konflux to enhance the learning process.
