THE first gluten and wheat-free ale to be brewed in Britain has been named the Best Beer Invention at a brewing industry award ceremony.
Hambleton Ale's GFA (Gluten Free Ale), which is brewed in Melmerby, North Yorkshire, won the award at the Tesco Beer Challenge.
The company, which recently moved from the village of Holme-on-Swale, in North Yorkshire, launched GLA in February.
There are estimated to be 750,000 people in the UK with gluten intolerance, which is a substance found in wheat, barley and rye that can hamper the absorbtion of nutrients and vitamins into the body.
Nick Stafford, who set up Hambleton Ales in 1991, said: "Beer is the UK's leading alcoholic drink but, until now, gluten-intolerant drinkers have been unable to enjoy a British-style, gluten-free beer.
"I am delighted to win such a respected award and it reflects well on my own staff and our commitment to innovation and customer service."
Hambleton Ales produces 100 barrels of ale a week, including Stallion premium bitter and Nightmare Stout. The company employs 15 staff.
GFA is available at supermarkets Tesco and Asda and other retailers, including Binns, in Darlington, Fenwick's, in Newcastle and Lewis and Coopers, in Northallerton, North Yorkshire.
It can also be ordered online at www.hambletonales.co.uk
