PRIMARY care trusts have joined forces to encourage people to get vaccinated against flu.
People in County Durham and Darlington, particularly those aged 65 and over or with health problems, are urged to visit their GP to claim a free jab.
Darlington, Derwentside, Durham and Chester-le-Street, Durham Dales, Easington and Sedgefield primary care trusts are offering the service as part of the Department of Health's campaign to combat flu.
Patients in the area aged 65 and over before March 31 will receive a letter this week to remind them to have a jab.
Those particularly at risk from flu include anyone with asthma, diabetes and chronic heart, chest, liver and kidney conditions.
Roberta Marshall, the director of County Durham and Tees Valley's Health Protection Unit, said: "Between 3,000 and 4,000 deaths are attributable to the complications of flu each year.
"The vaccination takes two minutes and is safe, effective and free for those who are at risk.
"If you have not yet had the jab or made arrangements to have it, you should contact your doctor's surgery."
For more information on the flu jab, contact your doctor, nurse or pharmacist or telephone NHS Direct on 0845 4647.
