STUDENTS at Durham High School for Girls have been given a preview of a stained glass window that is soon to be installed.
The window, which was designed and made by former school governor Dr Ruth Etchells, was dedicated by the Bishop of Jarrow, the Right Reverend John Pritchard, during a service on Tuesday.
It is to be fitted in the quiet room of the school's Hurworth Building and depicts the Angel Gabriel appearing to Mary.
Dr Etchells, who is also the former principal of St John's College, has depicted Mary wearing the uniform of the High School.
A spokeswoman at the school said: "The design is striking and immensely powerful and inspiring."
Headteacher Ann Templeman said: "The school feels humbled and privileged to have received such a wonderful gift which I hope will be an inspiration for present pupils and for generations to come."
At the same service, the bishop also dedicated a chalice donated by the Old Girls' Association and a paten - a Eucharist dish - given by Ella Wright in memory of her sister, Margaret Costello.
Mrs Wright was head girl at the school at the time of its jubilee celebrations in 1934.
