FACILITIES for sport and the arts in east Durham received a boost yesterday with the opening of a £716,000 development at Seaham.
The multi-purpose arts and sports hall at Ropery Walk Primary School, in the Deneside area of the town, was opened by Durham County Councillor Alan Fenwick.
The centre, funded jointly by Durham County Council and the regional development agency One NorthEast is already in use by pupils at the school.
Facilities include a sports hall, a games area and a classroom and office.
The school is one of eight in County Durham which have been awarded National Lottery grants to develop modern facilities for sports and arts, most of them through the Space for Sport and Arts programme.
Headteacher Simon Marshall said: "We are delighted to have the new facilities for the children we teach and for the many local people who want to participate in sport, enjoy the arts and be part of this thriving community."
Councillor Neil Foster, the county council's cabinet member for children's services, said: "This type of investment enables the young people of Seaham to enjoy sport and the arts."
