THE call has gone ringing out for people who have been bell-ringers in the past but have given up over the years.
Sonia Thompson, from a band at Shotley Bridge, is urging lapsed campanologists to get involved again.
She said: "We are an enthusiastic group of people of all ages and from all walks of life who come along to keep this traditional English exercise going. Numbers are depleted at the moment and we could use some more help.
"We would be really pleased to see ex-ringers.
"Even if people could only come and ring once or twice a month, it would make a huge difference to keeping alive this unique art."
The group would also like to hear from beginners. The band is holding an open evening at St Cuthbert's Church, Benfieldside, on Thursday, from 7.45pm to 9.15pm.
