NORTH DURHAM MP Kevan Jones has agreed to become the patron of the Chester-le-Street and District Voluntary Welfare Committee.
The committee, a charity which this year celebrates its 30th anniversary, runs a number of projects, including a welfare bus, which allows elderly, disabled and housebound people to attend local clubs and meetings.
Mr Jones said: "The welfare committee's work ensures that some of the most vulnerable people in the area are not left isolated.
"Just having visitors to talk to and days out to look forward to makes a huge difference to your quality of life.
"I am delighted to be able to show my support by becoming the group's patron."
The committee also runs the Welfare Alarm scheme, which provides alarms so vulnerable people can summon help if required.
It is chaired by Doreen Young and can be contacted on 0191-387 1044.
