ROAD safety chiefs are sponsoring the youngest driver in the British Rally Championship.

Dom Mernock, 18, from Harrogate, has made an impressive start in the Stars of the Future section of the contest.

The teenager drives a Group A6 Peugeot 206, which will feature the North Yorkshire County Council logo for the rest of the season.

Dom, and co-driver Mat Smith, 20, from Pickering, will appear with the council's road safety team at events aimed at young drivers to promote safe and considerate driving.

David Lindsay, county road safety officer, said: "Dom's methodical and thoughtful approach to rallying is reflected in his driving on normal roads. The mental and physical preparation necessary to succeed on the track is just as relevant on the highway.

"Unfortunately, crash statistics are littered with the stories of young drivers who don't prepare themselves or their vehicles and kill or injure themselves and others."

The rally drivers attended the Trackrod Rally Yorkshire event at Pickering Showground on Saturday.
