A 17-year-old boy appeared in court Saturday charged with the murder of a Darlington man.
The youth, also from the town, spoke only to confirm his name, age and address at Newton Aycliffe Youth Court, in County Durham.
He was charged with the murder of Stephen Humphries, 53, who was found beaten to death beside the Nags Head pub in Darlington town centre on Thursday night.
The boy, dressed in a black T-shirt and navy trousers, did not enter a plea to the charge.
No application was made for bail, and magistrates remanded the youth - who cannot be named for legal reasons - in custody. He will appear before Teesside Crown Court on Thursday.
