HISTORY lovers can join a guided walk in one of the region's most famous battlefields next week.
Local historian David Butler will lead a three-mile walk around the site of the Battle of Neville's Cross, fought between the English and Scots in the 14th Century.
The walk takes place on Sunday, October 16, the eve of the 659th anniversary of the battle in which 12,000 Scots, under King David, were defeated by a 5,000-strong army of Englishmen, commanded by the Archbishop of York.
The walk begins at Durham Johnston Comprehensive School, in Redhills Lane, Durham City, at 1.30pm. It is part of a programme of 112 walks in County Durham over the next six months.
Other walks planned for October include:
* Wednesday - a 14-mile hike from Blackton Bridge, near Eggleston, Teesdale.
* Next Friday - a seven-mile walk with music and verse, starting from Edmundbyers Church.
* Thursday, October 20 - 13 miles along the Sanctuary Way, between Beamish and Whickham.
* Friday, October 21 - an eight-mile ramble along the little denes, starting at the Castle Eden Inn.
