HISTORY lovers will have the chance to walk one of the region's most famous battlefields during an event next week.
Local historian David Butler will lead a three-mile walk around the site of The Battle of Neville's Cross, fought between the English and Scots in the 14th Century.
The walk takes place on Sunday, October 16, the eve of the 659th anniversary of the battle in which 12,000 Scots under King David were defeated by a 5,000-strong army of Englishmen, commanded by the Archbishop of York.
The walk begins at Durham Johnston School, in Redhills Lane, Durham City, at 1.30pm.
The event is part of a programme of 112 walks taking place in County Durham over the next six months.
Other walks planned for October include a 14-mile hike on Wednesday from Blackton Bridge,near Eggleston, Teesdale, a seven-mile walk next Friday starting from Edmundbyers Church, and an eight-mile stroll along the little denes, starting at the Castle Eden Inn, on October 21.
