CONSUMER watchdogs in Darlington have welcomed the launch of a scheme helping people identify businesses that are committed to good customer service.
The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has launched a consumer codes approval scheme.
Businesses that sign up to an approved code of practice will be able to display the OFT's logo.
The guidelines insist on the display of clear information about goods on sale, a straightforward customer complaints procedure and protection for deposits.
Recent research by the OFT showed that more than 75 per cent of consumers welcomed something to help them choose fair-dealing businesses.
Bill Dixon, Darlington Borough Council's cabinet member for consumer and services, said: "This code will make it easier for people to identify businesses trading fairly.
"The majority in Darlington have customers' interests at heart and now people will have confidence where they shop."
