NORTH Yorkshire Police have published a questionnaire inviting public comments on potential mergers.
Home Secretary Charles Clarke has backed plans to amalgamate smaller forces to produce large strategic forces.
North Yorkshire have until the end of October to report on options for change and until December 23 to come up with a preferred solution.
The force and the county's police authority have published questionnaires on their websites asking for public views.
Jane Kenyon, chairman of the police authority, said: "This timescale is incredibly challenging, so the earlier we hear of public opinion on this issue, the better.
"As we go into November and December, we will be also seeking views on specific proposals, although at the moment it is too soon to speculate on what these might be."
Chief Constable Della Cannings said: "The changes proposed will be a watershed in the history of policing, bringing about major changes to ensure the police service is fit for purpose in the 21st Century.
"It is critical, though, to ensure that communities receive improved policing and are involved in shaping the future of policing. The questionnaire is part of seeking public opinion.
"But this will only be the first of a programme of consultation with our communities over the next three months."
