THE market town of Malton is to have its first town council by-election for several years.
The election was prompted by the resignation of Councillor Sue Norman last month.
Ten electors said they wanted a full election rather than the existing town councillors appointing a replacement by co-option, as usually happens.
Mike Skehan, the town clerk, said the council would have to stand the £2,000 cost of the election, plus a further £900 if it wanted polling cards issuing to the 3,900 electors.
Voting will take place on November 17.
