THE Centre of Excellence for Life Sciences (Cels) has appointed MIKE HARTLEY as projects director.
Regional development agency One NorthEast has given Cels the task of expanding the region's life science and healthcare sector.
Mr Hartley has 19 years of manufacturing and electronic engineering experience, including working with medical devices and components for the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries.
He was previously employed at the Sector Skills Development agency, where he was responsible for the co-ordination and management of the Skills for Business Network.
Dr Ian Robson, Cels director of business development, said: "Mike's skills and business experience will add to our current competencies in the healthcare and life sciences sector.
"His appointment will help us to accelerate our strategy of developing new business opportunities for the companies within the region, especially in sunrise areas of the economy where we can create new jobs that will be sustainable for the long term."
