A SCHOOL will be filled with the sound of music this term as a number of talented students hone their skills on an array of instruments.
Durham School has maintained its reputation for high-quality music provision, after awarding 11 scholarships to aspiring musicians to keep the production line of talent flowing.
Music director Roger Muttit listened to scores of youngsters, singing or playing a variety of instruments, before selecting this year's scholarship award winners.
The 11 to emerge from January's auditions have all now taken up places at the school since the new term got underway recently.
They are Philip Anderson, Callum Bryden, Sue Choi, Alistair Galbraith-Brown, Philippa Heron, Guy Needham, Antonia Storey, Philip Tait, Graham Thorpe, Lewis West and Hugo Wood.
Most have joined the school as new starters in year seven, while others have entered at year nine or in the sixth form.
Meanwhile, three of the school's pupils have also been rewarded for their musical talents, with distinction awards.
They are 11-year-old Graham Thorpe and Harriet Brooks, 12, both for piano, and 13-year-old viola player Matthew Smith.
Poole House took the honours in the school's in-house music competition.
Poole beat the challenge of the four other houses, narrowly edging out the all-girl Macleod House in the final, staged in the school chapel.
Rick Wright, of Poole House, and Olivia Rae and Sarah Burns, from Macleod, were rewarded for their efforts in the competition.
