DOZENS of cars have been vandalised in an early morning wrecking spree.

Residents were woken by the noise as more than 30 cars were damaged by vandals in the centre of Durham City.

The incident happened at about 3am, on Sunday, with damage to cars parked on Atherton Street, behind the city's main bus station, and The Avenue.

Police received a 35 reports of vandalism, including wing mirrors being ripped off, bodywork damaged and at least one vehicle having its windscreen smashed.

Officers called to the scene arrested two men, one from Chester-le-Street and another from Tyneside, who were questioned and released on police bail pending further enquiries.
