CHURCHGOERS and schoolchildren have collected a quarter of a ton of groceries to help homeless people.
The congregation at St Oswald's Church in Sowerby, near Thirsk, and pupils of Sowerby Community Primary School also donated clothing and toiletries.
The huge collection of tins and packaged food was made at the recent harvest festival services and has now been taken to the Arc Light homeless project, in York.
Nicola Carnall, priest-in-charge for St Oswald's, said: "It was an amazingly generous response to help the needy in our community."
Arc Light, a registered charity near York railway station, provides a shelter for homeless men and women.
David Tucker, a member of St Oswald's, said it took two car journeys to transport the items to York.
Mr Tucker, who also took gifts of clothes and blankets from the Thirsk area, said: "There is always a need at Arc Light for blankets, and particularly socks, and they are very much appreciated."
