THREE long-established scholarship funds - one dating back 130 years - are to be wound up and the proceeds of £21,600 given to 11 Scarborough schools.
The Alderman J W Butler Scholarship was set up in 1948, the Lancastrian Prize in 1876 and the Rowntree Endowment in 1880 to aid pupils in Scarborough area schools.
John Moore, North Yorkshire County Council's finance director, said the money was to be used to buy library books for St Augustine's, Whitby School, Caedmon, Eskdale, Filey, Raincliffe, Pindar, Scalby, Graham and St Peter's Schools.
The Butler scholarship was given "to improve spoken and written English", while the Lancastrian Prize for was proficiency in history, and the Rowntree Endowment was "for girls for proficiency in domestic economy".
