Stockton Borough Council's healthy lifestyle team has introduced a ten-week weight management course at the town's Elm Tree Community Centre.
Weighing in for participants started on Friday.
Each session is accompanied by healthy eating advice and gentle exercise.
Carla Jackson, assistant community health and fitness advisor, said: "This is a great way to learn about living a healthy lifestyle as well as meeting new friends.''
Stockton Borough Council was awarded beacon status earlier this year for its work in health and social care.
