PEOPLE have proved they will go the distance when advised to lose weight.
Residents in Hartlepool clocked up about 20,000 miles as part of the Million Miles Challenge, run by Sport England.
It was launched during the summer to encourage people across the UK to stay healthy by exercising and recording the miles covered.
Now Hartlepool Borough Council has won an award for the activities it organised and promoted.
Groups including Burn Road Harriers, Hartlepool Triathlon Club, Hartlepool Swimming Club and schools took part in the challenge.
Andrew Pearson, the council's sports development manager, said: "We tried to promote a range of exercise opportunities and we are delighted that our innovative approach has been recognised with this award.
"The Million Mile Challenge was well supported, with many people finding time to walk, run, swim and cycle. I'd like to thank everyone who contributed to the town's mileage total, and urge others to consider the health benefits of exercising regularly."
